One country, two religions and three very telling pictures: The empty pews at churches just yards from an overcrowded mosque

Pay no attention to the 2011 Census that told us 33.2?million people in England and Wales describe themselves as Christians. For if you want a more telling insight into religion in the United Kingdom today, just look at these photographs.
bvn
The story they tell is more revealing than any survey. What they show are three acts of worship performed in the East End of London within a few hundred yards of each other at the end of last month. Two of the photos show Sunday morning services in the churches of St George-in-the-East on Cannon Street Road (bottom left), and St Mary’s on Cable Street (top left). The third (right) shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside the nearby mosque on the Brune Street Estate in Spitalfields.

UK teen threatened to be killed in Pakistan if she refused to marry

Girl tells police “she would be shot and everybody back home would be told it was suicide.”

A teenager, claiming she had been forced to marry a man, said if she refused, she would be taken to Pakistan and killed, Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, a 16-year-old girl turned up at a police station in the United Kingdom on her wedding night and claimed she had been forced to marry a man she had only met once.
Hearing the case, Luton County Court was told that the girl expressed fears to the police that “she would be shot and everybody back home would be told it was suicide.”
The Daily Mail report stated that the girl fled her wedding reception, which was attended by up to 1,000 guests, and arrived at a police station “in her pyjamas and in a distressed state.”
The report further revealed that death threats had previously been made against the runaway bride if she refused to marry.
Two women were accused in the case of conspiring to force the girl to marry, breaching court orders issued earlier banning any arranged wedding.
Counsels representing the accused women denied the accusations.

Russell Brand defends stereotyped Muslims

Russell says blaming Muslims for the Woolwich murder is “like blaming Hitler’s moustache for the Holocaust”. PHOTO: REUTERS

While most celebs prefer to stay silent, Russell Brand has made an effort to stand up against the negative, preconceived notions regarding the Muslim community.
Actor-comedian and author Russell, Katy Perry’s ex-husband, wrote a piece for The Sun on the recent Woolwich murder case. Below is an excerpt from his article:
I caught up with the sad malice in Woolwich and felt compelled to tweet in casual defense of the Muslim community who were being haphazardly condemned by a few people on my time line.
Perhaps a bit glibly (but what isn’t glib in 140 characters) I posted: “That bloke is a nut. A nut who happens to be Muslim. Blaming Muslims for this is like blaming Hitler’s moustache for the Holocaust.”
As an analogy it is imperfect but I was frightened by how negative and incendiary the mood felt and I rushed…
… After my Hitler tweet I got involved in a bit of back and forth with a few people who said stuff like: “The murderer  said himself he did it for Islam.”
Although I wouldn’t dismiss what he’s saying entirely, I think he forfeited the right to have his views received unthinkingly when he murdered a stranger in the street. Someone else regarding my tweet said: “Hitler’s moustache didn’t invent an ideology that sanctions murder.”
That is thankfully true but Islam, when practised by normal people, is not an advocacy for violence.
“People all over the world are killing in the name of Islam,” someone added. But this is the trickiest bit to understand.
What I think is that all over our country, all over our planet, there are huge numbers of people who feel alienated and sometimes victimised by the privileged and the powerful, whether that’s rich people, powerful corporations or occupying nations.
They feel their interests are not being represented and, in many cases, know their friends and families are being murdered by foreign soldiers. I suppose people like that may look to their indigenous theology for validation and to sanctify their — to some degree understandable — feelings of rage.
Comparable, I suppose, to the way that homophobes feel a prejudicial pang in their tummies then look to the Bible to see if there is anything in there to justify it. There is — a piddling little bit in Leviticus.
The main narrative thrust of The Bible though, like most spiritual texts including the (Holy) Quran is: Be nice to each other because we’re all the same.

Exporters send season’s first mango shipment

KARACHI:
Pakistan started exporting mangoes from Saturday as exporters managed to ship 400 tons on the first day of the new season that stretches from May to September.
The mango shipment mostly went to Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar as well as some European countries like the United Kingdom and Germany. Some 70% of the fruit was sent through sea while the remaining 30% was sent via air carriers.
“If all goes well, we hope that we will reach our export target of $60 million this year,” Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Association Chairman Waheed Ahmed told The Express Tribune. “We can achieve this if we continue to receive government support.”
The exporters needed the assistance of airlines, shipping lines and all relevant government departments to achieve the season’s target, he added.
A delegation of the association also met with the federal commerce secretary and top officials of the Trade Development Authority (TDAP) on Saturday to discuss and review arrangements for mango export.
PFVA is targeting to export 175,000 tons of mangoes this year. The fruit will also be sent to new markets like Japan, South Korea and Mauritius.
Traders expect total production of mango to touch 1.55 million tons this year, up from 1 million tons in previous year.
In the first week of May, the Ministry of Commerce set May 25 for the start of mango exports.

MQM rebuts Imran Khan’s allegations against Altaf Hussain

KARACHI: Expressing strong reaction over Imran's Khan allegations against Altaf Hussain for the killing of his party leader Zahra Shahid Hussain, MQM has termed Khan's remarks a petty move.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, MQM senior Leader Dr Farooq Sattar condemned the brutal murder of Zahra Syed and said that Imran Khan has showed his immaturity by blaming MQM supremo before the preliminary investigation. He said that Khan's statement would undermine the probe into the murder, adding that the remarks were tantamount to provoke the people.
Dr Sattar said that the MQM would sue the PTI chief for defamation and would file a case under article 62-63 over the Sita White case.
He said how a man, who had no courage to accept her daughter could materialize his six-point agenda.
He said that Khan even didn't bother to wait to let the police determine motive behind the murder before leveling allegations.
Condemning the killing of Zahra Hussain on behalf of Altaf Hussain, Farooq Sattar demanded that killers of Zahra be brought to justice. He said that the murder took place when partial re-polling was about to take place in NA-250 amid tight security.

Oil up in Asian trade

SINGAPORE: Oil was up in Asian trade Thursday as a surprise rise in German industrial production brightened the market's outlook for European and global growth, analysts said.
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in June added five cents to $96.67 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for June delivery gained 18 cents to $104.52.
"Dealers are cheering German industrial production figures that were significantly better than expected," Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, told.
"What we're seeing is an improved outlook for European and global growth."
The upbeat German factory output numbers came a day after China said it recorded an $18.2 billion surplus in April, stoking hopes of improving demand in the world's second biggest economy.
German industrial output saw a surprisingly robust rise in March driven by a sharp increase in the energy sector, official data showed Wednesday.
Industrial production rose by 1.2 percent in March compared with the previous month, beating analysts' expectations of a 0.2 percent decline.

PTI leader Zahra Shahid Hussain shot dead in Karachi

Zahra Shahid Hussain was a former PTI Sindh women's wing president and a founding member of the PTI.
KARACHI: Just hours before re-elections in some polling stations of NA-250 are due to begin, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf central vice president was shot dead outside her house in Karachi.
According to initial details, Zahra Shahid Hussain was shot dead outside her house in Defence Phase IV late on Saturday evening.
The motive of the attack could not be immediately ascertained.
However, SP Clifton Division Nasir Aftab said that initial findings pointed to a case of a purse snatching gone wrong. Aftab told The Express Tribune that per Hussain’s daughter, her mother got into their car to leave. The driver wheeled the car out and was locking up the gate when two men on a bike pulled up and tried to snatch her purse. “When she resisted they shot her.”
The culprits sped away after the incident.
The police said that they are trying to get the statement of the eye witness and continuing investigations into the incident.
PTI media coordinator Jameel Siddiqui told The Express Tribune that  given the situation prevailing in the city, the incident could be a part of those events.
Shortly after the incident, a large number of PTI workers gathered outside the National Medical Centre, where Hussain had been brought for treatment.
Meanwhile, the caretaker chief minister Justice (retd) Zahid Kurban Alvi condemned the attack and has sought a report from IG Sindh.
