NUST fines girls for wearing jeans, tights

The management of National University of Sciences and Technology (Nust) has made it mandatory for female students to wear ‘dupatta’ and put a ban on wearing ‘jeans’ in the premises of the university, according to sources.

The Nust’s management, however, has denied the report, saying that students have been instructed to wear ‘decent’ dresses.

According to a notice pasted on the notice board of the university, 11 students have been fined because of different reasons, including smoking and eating in labs. As many as seven students have been fined for not wearing dupatta or wearing jeans and tights.

A document signed by Nust’s Deputy Director (Administration) Abdul Nasir shows that some female students have been fined Rs500 to Rs1,000 for wearing jeans and tights and for not wearing dupatta.

According to the document, RA, a student of BBA, was fined Rs1,000 for wearing jeans and SM, another BBA student, was fined Rs500 for wearing tights.

Another five students — ZB, HA, AT, AB and SM — were asked to pay fines ranging between Rs500 and Rs1,000 for not wearing dupatta.

All the students were checked on Sept 17 and were found without dupatta.

According to a faculty member, Nust does not allow formation of academic staff association. Talking on condition of anonymity, he said no one from faculty members would comment on the issue. The environment in the university was very strict because all important administrative posts were held by retired army officers, he added.

“Male and female students are not allowed to sit together and they are fined for violation. Teachers and students know that they will be fired and rusticated if they do anything against the will of the administration,” he said.

Another faculty member who works in the Rawalpindi campus of the university said that top management of the university was liberal, but junior officers were very strict and they were running the university like a ‘military academy’.

TALKING POINT: The Nust issue has become much talked about among the youth of twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. They are sending messages on cellular phones to each other and posting their comments on social media networks.

A student posted on Twitter: “There is a separate cafe which boys can go to after 5 and separate cafe for girls….. Hide conversation.”

Another student Tweeted: “Wow.. never had an idea Nust was the taliban markaz.. thank God I didnt submit fee there.”

One student wrote: “Its the new Pro-Rector who is coming up with such awesome rules. It was bearable before.”

Nust’s spokesman Irshad Rao was contacted through Public Relation Officer Syed Raza Ali, but he refused to respond on the issue.

Mr Raza Ali told Dawn that he had seen the notice but he could not say anything about it because the management did not share such things with the media wing.

“As far as I know the management has instructed students to wear formal dresses and in case of violation they are fined. The Media wing will look into it on Wednesday,” he added.

Personal Staff Officer of Rector Col Mohsin said that students were allowed to wear any kind of dress.

However, he added, students were not allowed to wear indecent dresses. “Shorts are not allowed in university’s premises. As far as Hijab is concerned, it is up to the will of parents,” he said.

When he was asked about the notice of fines, Mr Mohsin said that he was not aware of it.

Earthquake creates new island off Gwadar coastline

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 45 people in Balochistan, besides creating a new island off the Gwadar coastline in its wake, Express News reported.
Tremors were felt as far as the Indian capital New Delhi.
The quake struck at 4:29 pm local time (1129 GMT) around 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of the city of Khuzdar in Balochistan province, at a depth of 15 kilometres.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.7, recording its duration as eight seconds.
On the Gwadar coastline, the quake created a small island about half a mile into the sea near an area called ‘Jhanda’, according to Express News.
The newly appearing island is said to have a mountainous terrain rising up to a hundred feet. A large crowd was seen gathering at the site to see the new island.
The area of the epicentre is sparsely populated, but the USGS issued a red alert for the quake, warning that heavy casualties were likely, based on past data.
A senior Pakistani meteorologist, Muhammad Riaz, told Dunya TV station it was a “major” earthquake and “heavy destruction” was likely.
Minor tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, while office workers in the city of Ahmedabad near the border with Pakistan ran out of buildings and into the street.
Mumtaz Baluch, senior local administration official in Awaran district, 350 kilometres southwest of Quetta, told AFP: “There are reports of houses being collapsed in the district due to earthquake.”
“We have dispatched our teams to the affected area to ascertain the losses.”
In April a 7.8-magnitude quake centred in southeast Iran, close to the border with Baluchistan, killed 41 people and affected more than 12,000 on the Pakistan side of the border.
People working in offices Karachi rushed out of their building and sat on the footpaths along the roads or stood away from the buildings.
“My work table jerked a bit and again and I impulsively rushed outside,” Noor Jabeen, a 28-year woman working for an insurance company said while breathing heavily.
“It was not so intense but it was terrible,” said Owais Khan, who works for a provincial government office.
“Whenever I feel jolts it reminds me of the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir,” said Amjad Ali, 45, IT official standing on the road said.

A number of Tunisian Girls Return Home Pregnant After traveled to Syria to wage ‘ Jihad’ in Syria .(video report)

Syria : Tunisian women who travelled to Syria to offer themselves to Islamist opposition fighters in sexual jihad are returning pregnant, a government minister has claimed
A number of Tunisian girls who had travelled to Syria to perform “sexual jihad” there have returned back home pregnant, Tunisian Interior Minister Lotfi Bin Jeddo said on Thursday.
The Tunisian girls “are (sexually) swapped between 20, 30, and 100 rebels and they come back bearing the fruit of sexual contacts in the name of sexual jihad and we are silent doing nothing and standing idle,” the non-partisan minister said during an address to the National Constituent Assembly.
Bin Jeddo said the interior ministry has banned 6,000 Tunisians from travelling to Syria since March 2013 and arrested 86 individuals suspected of forming “networks” that send Tunisian youth for “jihad” to Syria.
The minister hit back at human rights groups criticizing the government’s decision to ban suspected “jihadists” from travel. Most of those slapped with travel bans were less than 35 years old, he said.
“Our youths are positioned in the frontlines and are taught how to steal and raid (Syrian) villages,” Bin Jeddo said.
Former Mufti of Tunisia Sheikh Othman Battikh said in April that 13 Tunisian girls “were fooled” into travelling to Syria to offer their sexual services to rebels fighting to overthrow the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Sheraton Hotel To Close Its Business In Karachi

Karachi: Pakistan is yet to face another set back as the Sheraton Hotel would shut down its business the next year, January 2014. It is being said that the deteriorated law and order situation in the country and the announcement by the government to start up operation clean up in the metropole city against the criminal bodies are the prime reasons for such decision.

Unfortunately, the previous government in the past five years had completely failed to maintain peace across the country especially in Karachi, which is the financial hub and the revenue generating city of the country. Being a port city, it remains deprive of enjoying the deserved attention.
Sheraton Hotel is a chain of American hotel chain run by American company, Starwood hotels and and Resorts Worldwide Inc. The Kuwait based owner of Sheraton hotel Karachi, Arabian Sea Enterprises Limited has decided of not renewing its contract with Starwood. Instead, has managed to enter into deal with Movenpick Hotels and Resorts that have their international luxury hotel based in Switzerland.

MA Bawany, Executive Director at Pakistan Services Limited which manages one of the most luxury hotel –Pearl continental expressed his views that being American hotel, Sheraton is likely to face terrorist attack and this might be the reason for switching over to non-American hotel chain. Non-American hotels charge less than $100 per night and hence their recovery margin is less unlike Sheraton which is a royal-branded hotel.
According to the Board of Investment, the foreign investment dropped from $ 5.3 billion in 2007-2008 to $ 1.4 billion in 2012-2013.
Officials say that only 5 % foreign visitors make up the occupance in these royal hotels and after the ‘operation clean-up’ announcement, they have decline to visit Pakistan the following year.

Don’t Believe In Jannah After Death: Shaista Lodhi

shaista lodhi scandalsMonths back Geo TV Morning Show host Shaista Lodhi has again attracted the social website pages as she presented a very wrong thought in her show stating that as being a human being we should strive more for making our world a pleasure, a divine Jannah for us instead of putting efforts for the Hereafter heaven. Her controversial words have created hype in the social media networks once again where she is being highly criticized by people for presenting such ridiculous notion.

In the beginning of the show, the doctor cum host said that people may contradict with her idea but it was she believes in. She said that we should make this world, our living place heaven for us and not believe in earning heaven in life hereafter solely. The video, cutting of the program which carries her wordings is of 26 seconds and can be seen on the websites easily.
People have slammed the host calling her to be a hypocrite, illiterate. Earlier too, she had faced oppositions from people after the news items began to appear of her divorce because she did not want to give up her career and dedicate herself as a housewife. There had also been rumors of the Shaista, sister of the host, versatile Sahir Lodhi to enter into marriage knots with Shakeel Ur Rehman, the Geo TV owner, where she presently works.

Shraddha is my Close Friend – Aditya Roy Kapur

Aditya Roy Kapur is resolutely present when he talks and willing to go wherever the conversation takes him. There’s something compellingly unusual about the actor, who’s only recently hit upon sudden unprecedented success. Yes, Aditya Roy Kapur is coming off a big year. A career-altering blockbuster of a year. Read Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). But the young actor knows that what he does next will ultimately define his place in the industry.  As we settle down for a conversation at a suburban bar-cum-restaurant in Mumbai, some girls shout, ‘Hey you, we love you!’ Really, that’s what they scream from a distance. Once Aditya gives them a friendly wave, the ‘Hey you’ girls drunkenly shuffle up to our corner table and ask if Aditya will pose for a picture. He does. “It’s pretty interesting,” he says of the whole serendipitous and charmed new non-normalcy of being Aditya Roy Kapur. With that sorted, he orders a piping hot black coffee and we begin our interview that traces the journey of his newfound success. Excerpts…
Question: You’ve had a great year with Aashiqui 2 becoming a runaway hit and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani being the 3rd highest grosser in the history of Indian cinema. Did you anticipate this?
Answer: Honestly, you can never foresee something like this. I just took my time, chose the films I believed in and worked hard. And that has paid off. So I am naturally thrilled. I always had the feeling that I was on the right track but I never imagined life would change so much for me. I am happy about the fact that I’ll get to do more good work. That’s something every actor lives for.
Question: You had once said that you’d be more comfortable doing offbeat cinema. With two commercial successes, has your attitude changed?
Answer: I never grew up being enamoured by the industry or by the idea of being an actor or a star or this being the be all and end all of my life. I am figuring things out as they come. Yes, five years ago, I couldn’t imagine doing mainstream cinema. I believed I’d be doing something more offbeat. But the truth is, all my films have been commercial. Right from London Dreams to Action Replayy to Guzaarish and now Aashiqui 2 and YJHD. It’s only now that I’ve realised that this is what I enjoy doing. So I shouldn’t be having delusions about the kind of actor I am.
Question: So it’s box-office success above all else for you?
Answer: I want a large number of people to watch my films. From a rickshaw wallah to the shopper at a mall, everyone loved Aashiqui 2. I want to continue doing films that connect with the audience. Also, at the end of the day, we are in a business. So who wouldn’t like to be known as a commercially viable actor who can bring in the moolah? I would.
Question: Both your brothers Siddharth Roy Kapur (MD, Studios, Disney UTV) and Kunaal Roy Kapur (actor) are in show business. Any plans of working with them?
Answer: Well, we’ve all decided to consciously stay out of each other’s careers. It’s been a no-brainer really. We’ve all found success through our own separate paths and I’d rather it remain like that. Yes, if some director goes to Sid and says he wants to cast me in the film, he’s not going to say no. But he won’t go out of his way to promote me or Kunaal. Kunaal is doing well. I’m getting there, so there’s no reason to get into that zone. Maybe we’ll all think about working together in the future. But not right now.
Question: Apparently, you have been offered quite a few films with Kunaal after YJHD.
Answer: Well, people have come to us with a few scripts. Let’s see what happens. It’s still a long shot because neither of us will finalise on anything till we’re not sure that the film would be amazing. I had a fabulous time working with Kunaal on YJHD. I’d love to do it again soon.
Aditya-Roy-Kapur
Question: What kind of a rapport do you share with your bhabhi, Vidya Balan Roy Kapur?
Answer: We are family. We spend time together on weekends. We talk films. I don’t share a formal bhabhi-devar relationship with her. We’re more like friends, who sit around cracking jokes. She’s a new addition to our crazy family and we have a blast together every Sunday afternoon.
Question: Do you take career advice from her, since she’s successfully created her own niche in the industry?
Answer: Not in a conscious way. I don’t call her and ask her what to do. We all know what’s going on in each other’s lives. So there are always suggestions and points of view thrown around. I do take cues from her about the way she approaches her work, etc. But my life’s decisions are my own and ditto with Siddharth and Kunaal. We don’t tell each other how to live.
Question: Vidya is supposedly doing a film with Mohit Suri and the Bhatts. Since you’ve worked with them, have you given her any tips on what she should expect?
Answer: I haven’t met her for a while. Both she and my brother have been busy running around here and there. But I guess I will talk to her about all that when I meet her. I just haven’t had the chance yet.
Question: Besides your film with Yash Raj, it’s said that you’ve signed another project with the Bhatts and one with Bejoy Nambiar. True?
Answer: I haven’t signed anything besides my YRF film yet. I am still looking at scripts. But I am damn kicked about working with director Habib Faisal and Parineeti Chopra. They’re both talented people. So it should be fun.
Question: Name a few directors that are on your wish list at the moment.
Answer: Dibakar Banerjee, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vishal Bhardwaj, all directors I’ve worked with. In fact, there are quite a few talented directors around. I’d love to work with all of them.
Question: Do you get bogged down by competition considering the amount of newcomers that debut every year?
Answer: The thought of stepping up one’s game and doing better is there in everyone’s mind. But once you allow it to affect you negatively, there’s no end to it. It’s a big industry and there are always going to be young guys and girls coming in. If you get bogged down by competition and keep comparing yourself to others, you’ll lose your mind. I appreciate the work of my peers, see why they are good at what they’re doing, take a cue from them and move on.
Question: So insecurities have never got the better of you?
Answer: Yes, they have. When I am working, I always feel the need to improve. I do get insecure about my capabilities at times because we always have scope to get better. I guess actors are an insecure breed. If I can approach a film at this stage in my career with absolute conviction about being able to nail it, then I guess I’ve lost it. It’s only the fear of getting it wrong that makes you put in those 20 extra hours of work.
Question: Have you ever felt like you couldn’t do it?
Answer: Yeah. On so many days I’ve felt like giving up. In fact, I’ve felt like this on every film. But I’ve realised that everyone has those days when they feel they can’t do it. You just have to trudge through it and believe that a better day will come where you’ll be proud of your achievements. Invariably, that day does come.
Question: Tell me, what is the biggest misconception people have about you?
Answer: Fortunately, I’ve been able to take everything with a pinch of salt. People have these preconceived notions about how I got so far in my career. Many feel it’s because of other reasons and not my hard work. But I don’t take it or them seriously. People talk. There will always be a section of people who’d want to bring you down. So I don’t let loose talk affect me.
Question: Recently, there have been strong rumours linking you to Shraddha Kapoor. Are you seeing her?
Answer: See, we’ve gone through this amazing experience together (Aashiqui 2) because of which both our lives have changed. Only the two of us know how things have happened, so we can identify with what’s going on in each other’s lives. We’re very close. She’s a good friend. We chill and party together. That’s about it.
Question: So you’re single?
Answer: Yes, I am because I haven’t found someone who I really want to be with or commit to.
